Orbit
Where a sofa ends, Orbit continues.
A coffee table and a side table upholstered in the same fabric as the sofa they stand with. Orbit stops being an object placed next to the seating group and becomes part of it: a hybrid of upholstery and case furniture, with storage inside.
The idea
A seating group is usually a negotiation: the sofa is soft and upholstered, everything around it is hard and wooden. Orbit is covered in the same fabric range as the sofa, so the table reads as one more volume of the seating group rather than a separate piece of furniture.
Above the upholstered body, an oak rim carries two half-round segments, one oak and one stone. The oak segment runs on glide strips set into the rim. Turned, it opens half the volume below; turned back, it closes into one continuous surface. Nothing is hinged, and it works with one hand.
The side table repeats the idea at stool height, in the same cover: a lid that lifts away, storage inside.
Built to be repaired
The segments and the stone lift out as separate parts, and the upholstered body is a single component that an upholsterer can re-cover. Every fixing is reached from inside the open body, so a damaged part is replaced on its own.
At the end of its life, wool, wood and stone separate cleanly: the oak can be reused, the stone re-cut, the wool re-spun or composted. Orbit ships assembled in one carton made only of paper, without plastic film or foam.
Orbit is looking for a manufacturer.
